Math-Whizz Review

Jenny/ October 30, 2018/ Homeschool Reviews

One of my absolute favorite things about blogging is that I get to review some really great products!  I get excited about this because it  gives you an opportunity to see these things in action before you spend your hard-earned money on them.  This month we were given the chance to review Math-Whizz by Whizz Education.  It is an online math tutor program.  They say its not technically an entire math program however if you use the teacher’s resources with it, it can be!

This program was developed using artificial intelligence and it automatically adjusts based on your student’s needs.  I will have to say, it is a really awesome program!  Both of our boys (7 & 4) absolutely LOVE it and actually argue over who gets to go first (hehe).

So, how does it work?  When you first sign up, you get a parent account and then add your students and their ages.  Each child will have a unique login.  I could only use this on my desktop because I didn’t have adobe flash on my tablets.  It is internet dependent.

After you sign your students up, you will log them in and they will take an assessment test.  Its not super lengthy (I think the boys’ took between 15-20 minutes).  Then it will give you their math age.  For example, Gabe is not yet 5 but he scored a math age of 5.25.  Then it will set up their goals and progressions based on what areas they are weak in or strong in.

As a parent you have the option to set goals for them in the parent dashboard and the program keeps up with the time they log.  The suggest you use it for a certain time period each week to see the average progression of 18 months in only 12 months time (I thought that was exciting!).  Jake used his consistently for about 80 minutes a week working on progressions and increased his math age by almost 1/4 of a year in only 3 weeks!  Gabe increased his math age by about 2 months in only 3 weeks with an average of 40 minutes of work on progressions a week.

Why do they enjoy it?  It is a FUN program.  There is lots of animation, sounds and silly stuff to keep their attention.  They also earn points which they can redeem in the store for pets, plants, toys and games.  They can decorate their study room in the colors they choose (the boys loved this!).  There is also a play room where they can play with the pets and toys they purchase.  Another fun incentive to keep working is that they have to purchase feed for their pets each time they visit (so they need to keep earning points!).

I am super impressed with the quality of this program!  One funny thing is that it is from England so they do use a bit different expressions for math sometimes.  It wasn’t a big deal but I did have to explain a few terms to the boys as they went along 🙂  The boys also thought the accent of the speakers was funny.

If you would like to see your child advance quickly in math I highly recommend this program!  Also check out the other reviews below to see the different levels of math addressed in the reviews!
