  27. Hey there! I’m a real person and not a blog post spammer, haha. Anyway, I just checked out your article in Countryside Magazine that detailed your attempts to live self-sufficiently. As a homesteader ALSO in the Ozarks and ALSO trying to live self-sufficiently, it’s always nice to find someone else who’s at least on a similar lifestyle and goalset! Anyway, I wasn’t sure what way was best to contact you, so I hope this goes through. I was wondering–what did you do to get your squash to grow well? I battle squash bugs like crazy, and usually lose, rarely ever bringing in one or two finished pumpkins and winter squash. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Heck, if you’d be willing to compare garden notes, I would be over the moon! Not a lot of folks to talk to about self-sufficiency these days.

    1. Hi its nice to have an actual person and not someone advertising medicine leave a comment!! We have found rotation to really help with bugs. Plant your squash/pumpkin as far away as possible from last year’s crop. Also this year we planted blue hubbard in our pumpkins. The bugs finally came at the very end of the season but we’re too late to harm our crops. We also grew our summer squash vertically this year which was a HUGE help! Hope this helps. There are also resistant varities you can plant of both summer and winter squash.

      1. That’s exactly what I’m asking….what are those resistant varieties you plant? I rotate every year (haven’t tried vertically growing, but it’s a little impractical in our fields…) You mention blue hubbard…are you saying that you planted it as a trap plant? Thanks for repsonding!

        1. Yes I planted the blue hubbard as a catch crop. Full disclosure.. I don’t know if they caught the bugs but we had zero trouble in that field until right at the end of season. The bugs did not seem to bother our striped cushaw or sugar pie pumpkin hardly at all when they did come finally. We planted our summer squash vertically not our winter squash. They did produce much better than normal. To give you a bit of background… We plant a huge 2 gardens where my in-laws planted for 50 years. As a result there is a huge squash bug problem. My father in law could not grow squash this year. The bugs destroyed him. But our vertically grown plants bore through this fall (then finally succumbed). We planted yellow crooked squash for summer squash. A few notes.. Our pumpkin did amazing but we planted in a spot that hadn’t had squash in literally 50 years. Obviously everyone doesn’t have this option but if you can majority rotate every year I think it helps out 90%! Last year we planted in a different garden and wehad little bug pressure until the end also. I hope this helps!

          1. Thanks for more specifics! We’ve got the opposite situation: a garden that’s only three years old, haha! Obviously, the drought/heat dome that we had this summer didn’t help much, but I have a lot of hope for the next planting season. The squash that we planted in a totally new (as in, it was a field last year and a forest two years prior) probably succumbed to the heat more than the bugs, but I hate the stinkers so much I think I blame everything on them. Anyway, I hope you have a good fall, and I appreciate you taking the time to write back. See you in the next Countryside!

          2. Hi Wren, small world here. I’m just reading an article in Backwoods Home Magazine by you😂

          3. Haha! Small world indeed. Hope it was helpfu! Well, you have my e-mail–feel free to continue chatting if ever you want. It seems we could bandy about a lot of topics and ideas as we continue living this life.
