A Review of "Stories to Short Chapters" by WinterPromise Publishing!

I’m a homeschooling mama of 2 boys (7 & 4) and a little girl (1).  My boys are the super active, outdoorsy boys (and my little girl is already also)!  They aren’t fond of sitting still and sit-down work can be quite challenging!  I was despairing a little with my 7 year old, because though he’s very bright, reading can be our worst subject of the day simply because he thinks the young reader’s books are silly (twaddle, I believe Charlotte Mason called it!).  Then I was browsing through WinterPromise Publishing because we love their Dinosaur Days curriculum so much and guess what I found!!!!  A living language arts program that uses a squirrel, chipmunks and a mouse to teach you to read!  Can we say, “right up my boys alley?”  I was so thrilled when they gave me the opportunity to review their Stories to Short Chapter language arts program!!

 

WinterPromise has a great set of language arts programs.  They start out with Letters to Little Words, then Syllables to Sentences, next comes Paragraphs to Pages and then this one (Stories to Short Chapters).  There is also a Readers to Real Books which picks up where this one leaves off.  You can take an assessment to see where you child should be (they aren’t divided by grade, but by mastery levels, which makes sense!).  Any of these can be used for a full year or half year, depending on the speed your child progresses through them.  No child is average and this program can be customized to fit your unique child!  That is so important in my thinking. 

 

See, I’m a book addict and have loved reading since I was a very small child and one of my most important goals (after my children loving and honoring Christ with their lives) is to instill a deep love and appreciation for reading good literature! But you have to start with exciting their curiosity and desire to work at it!  So, lets take a look at the program and what it entails. I can’t help but dance a little jig in my seat as I describe these to you! They are so much fun (and shh..don’t tell my boys but they are learning so much with it!)!

First, we have the Stories to Short Chapters guide.  This is so nice for parents because it gives you a rundown of each day and tells you what to do on each day, taking the extra planning time off your shoulders!  Its going to show you how to use your readers, copywork book, and much more!  You won’t want to miss out on this part!

 

Then we have the readers.  Ooh, just the names make me smile!  Frolic in the Forest Student Book, Winter in the Woods Student Book, Mischief in the Meadow Student Book & Havoc in Pine Hollow Student Book.  These are consumable and take your student on a journey with their new animal friends, Acorn, Dash, Scoot & Tatty!  They will learn spelling, practice reading, learn new vocabulary, narration and grammar and have so much fun while doing it!  They’ll also get to play Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game & An Acorn Game!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now, after all this we still have more!  It also comes with a Pine Hollow Handwriting Set.  There are 36 pages of handwriting practice that go along with the readers (one a week, so your writers don’t become discouraged, while still getting great practice!).  Honestly, my son doesn’t like to write but he really enjoys these and proudly showed me the great job he had done on the first page!  How awesome is that?

 

So, now are you as excited as I am to start this program?  Wouldn’t you have loved to have had this as a child?  I know I sure would have (and my husband might not have spent his school days longingly staring out a window)!  I hope you’ll follow my reading journey with this wonderful set of resources.  I’ll have updates on it soon!
