We got to review a unique book from The Critical Thinking Co.™ called Creative Problem Solving Level 1. This is a consumable 212 page paperback book. You can also get a digital version if you choose so you can reprint as needed!

This book is specifically designed to help your child learn to creatively problem solve. My son thought it was super fun and didn’t think of it as work. I actually thought it was fun too!

This book was geared for ages 4-Grade 2 but my 9 year old used it. Younger kids could use it but honestly some might not understand all the scenarios or be able to do the writing prompts in the back.

The first section deals with using a magic pencil to fix situations. Jake loved this part and came up with some very creative fixes.

The next sections give you various scenarios. In this book they are imaginary such as being on different planets, aliens, superheroes ECT… Most kids should think these are FUN! Anyway they give you a problem such as “Planet Heavy Rains” it rains coconuts on planet Heavy Rain. The clouds are palm trees hanging all over the planet. There are mountains of coconuts on the ground that makes it difficult to walk since they are unstable. Then you need to draw a creature that could live here and explain why.

There are also some practical problems to solve such as designing a toothbrush cup that doesn’t get dirty in the bottom and inventing a back scratcher.

Why would you need critical thinking?

I don’t know about you but I use critical thinking all the time in REAL LIFE! It is a HUGE part of life and if you don’t know how to do it then you will be very handicapped. And I’m not talking about the critical thinking from my high school biology book “are humans still evolving or have they stopped evolving”? I mean come on, there is actually no room for critical thinking in this question. To truly be able to think critically you need to be able to look at all sides and options of a problem.

Thinking critically and coming up with creative solutions to problems is also fantastic for your brain. It stretches your mind and forces you to think outside the box. This book also helps you learn to plan the steps you need to take in order and why you would do them that way.

The Critical Thinking Company has a lot of different options for your family for all different age levels. We thought this book was a great addition to our homeschool learning! I also think it would be awesome to buy several different ones and keep for road trips!
