My youngest son is 6 so we were blessed to be able to review BJU Press Homeschool and their program called BJU Press Focus on Fives. This is a HUGE curriculum designed for kindergarten! We received all the materials (they came in 2 big boxes) including teachers manuals, student work-texts, supplements, flashcards ECT…

What’s in this kindergarten program?

I’m going to be perfectly honest here and say, when all this arrived it was kinda overwhelming! I mean 2 BIG BOXES of books just for KINDERGARTEN? But as soon as son saw it he was SO excited. It thrilled him to no end that all this was just for him. We have 4 kids under 9 so sharing is the norm. When he found out he didn’t have to share this, he was pumped lol😬.

Anyway, their are 6 BIG spiral bound tracher manuals. These are reusable so if you have multiple children you’re wanting to use this with this is a big money saver! These manuals are VERY detailed. They tell you exactly what to do for each lesson.

Of course I can’t tell you everything that’s in this curriculum but let’s say its very thorough. One thing I am really working on with my so is fact recall. He has some learning difficulties and recalling facts from a story is extremely difficult for him. So this is one thing this kindergarten curriculum addresses a lot. It will have you read them a story then they need to tell you certain things from it. For example what was the boy wearing or where are they going, who did they see ECT…

A giant component of this program is worksheets. They are bright and fun looking though. But if you have a child like my 9 year old who despises worksheets you might have a problem. However, my 6 old is CRAZY about them. Go figure! He sat down and begged to do multiple ones the first day and that pattern continued. He actually loves this program and all the work pages!

What did we work on in this kindergarten curriculum?

I want to also mention that this is a Christian kindergarten curriculum. It is really made for Christian schools so their are lots of references to that and it assumes you are teaching multiple students at once which isn’t how homeschooling usually works (not in the same grade level anyway). However, it is not hard at all to tweak to just one student! That being said it also has something in the front about going online for printable pages. This DOES NOT apply to homeschoolers (only private schools) so you cannot reproduce these pages at all. Just wanted to make this clear because it confused me!

We used this curriculum 3-5 days a week and often on the weekends he would just ask to do his “homework”. We didn’t make it hugely intensive. I would go over the basics and he would work until he got tired of it. So, as a general rule he would work for 30-60 minutes on it, because he actually liked it. Which if you have an active 6 year old boy you know is the biggest part of it!

I do like this program and if you are looking for an all-inclusive kindergarten curriculum this may be the perfect choice for you. I want to also note that they have added some elements just for homeschoolers (flipchart ect…) and they will have online videos coming in July!
