We were blessed to review Math-U-See and their Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Addition and Subtraction. My son was needing to work on quick recall of his addition and subtraction facts so this was perfect for us! We received the manual, blocks, cards, colored pencils and online video access.

How to use Math-U-See…

This program is pretty multifaceted so be prepared for that! That being said I want to give a short testimonial here. My son was having to count his lower addition and subtraction. This really turned the lightbulb on for him and he’s now able to do them from memory!

This program uses flashcards, math fact posters, blocks in different colors and number configurations, writing the problems and video instruction. This is NOT an entire math course, its meant to be a supplement for struggling learners.  However I also used the blocks with my 6 year old son and he absolutely loved them. He would sit down at the table on his own once I showed him how to add with them and make his own math problems!

Your child will watch a short instructional video and then conplete a lesson. We also used the cards multiple times a day to practice the problems! He rapidly improved with this program. I’m continuing it for subtraction as we’ve been working on addition. I also want to mention their is a placement test to see where they are having issues!

The blocks are colored coded according to numeric value so before the first lesson they want your child to have those in their heads. This may take a little while to do but its foundational so don’t skip it!

Math blocks

The colored pencils are used to color in the blocks in the math problems.

We had personally never used Math-U-See before though I had heard very good things about it. I can see why it works so well after using this supplemental program of theirs. I would definitely be interested in looking at their complete programs especially the more advanced ones!

Math

I think one thing that made a huge difference was the visual part. If a child can see that a light blue (5) and a pink (3) make a brown (8) it just seems to click for them!

Math facts

They also explain the problems in a way that helps them stick in your child’s mind.

All of the included supplies appear durable with the exception of the flashcards. They are on perforated thick paper and probably need to be laminated after you tear them apart for optimal durability. I’m going to do this especially since I have multiple children I will be using this with!

The lesson manual gives the teacher detailed and step by step instructions. It looks a little overwhelming but just dive in and you’ll get the hang of it.

Math u see

This program is designed for children who are struggling with foundational math. And if these problems aren’t corrected they will have an extremely hard time later with more advanced math. So its important to fix it as soon as you can!
