"Jehovah's Mighty Acts" Review

I have reviewed several books in the past for Reformed Free Publishing so when I was asked to review their new book “Jehovah’s Mighty Acts” I was happy to say yes!  They have very high quality books and I’ve been super pleased with everything I’ve reviewed so far!  This book was no exception.  Its hardback with absolutely loads of color pictures throughout it!

What’s it about?  This is the first in a brand new series of books designed to group stories from the Bible with the same overarching theme together.  The series is entitled “Tell His Wonders”.  Each book has one main theme (this one is Jehovah’s Mighty Acts) and is arranged in chronological order.  This book starts at the beginning and is foundational to the whole series.  All the stories found in this book are from the Old Testament.

What we thought of this book:

The overall design and layout of the book is extremely attractive.  The large hardback edition just screams quality and a “hand-down” book!  We loved the full-color paintings throughout the book 🙂  I also loved how it told the stories in a very conversational style that was easy to read and easy for kids to understand!

 

We were also very pleased with the amount of stories in the book and the ones they chose.  This is more than just the ones every Bible story book tells about, it digs deeper and the sacrificial love of Christ is presented in each one!

 

I also like that it doesn’t gloss over sin but neither does it present it in graphic terms. These books are designed for ages 7-10 and I personally found it age appropriate.

 

How we used it:

I used it as a morning read-a-loud for our 4 children. They enjoyed the bright pictures and the short (but not too short) stories in it!

 

What I didn’t like:

Honestly there were a few things I wasn’t completely crazy about in the book. (Not many, but I want full disclosure here). 

• It seemed to add some things to the stories that aren’t actually in the Bible.  Example..in the account of Adam naming the animals it says he gave them special names different from what we know them as and said that he could see God’s Word that made each animal and named them after that.  I’m not sure where they got that?

• This is from Reformed Free Publishing Association so they are of the Calvinists persuasion, which I am not. I hadn’t noticed this in any of the previous books I’ve reviewed, but in this one there are several references to God coming to save “his elect” and redeeming the elect. While I do believe Christ saves those who call on his name and they then become his elect I believe Christ came to save ALL and that he doesn’t have a selected group of people he wants or decided to save. 

 

All in all, though, this book is definitely worth getting. You can easily weed out any references you don’t want, which is what I always do anyway!
