We are a family that LOVES to read and so its been hard for me to not get frustrated at my oldest son for not wanting to practice his reading. When we were given The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set by Albert Whitman & Company to review I was super excited to see if these peaked his interest.

Boxcar children

We received 4 hardcover books that are early readers of the more advanced chapter book versions. These turned out to be absolutely perfect for my son! They were in-depth enough to hold his attention but still he was able to read almost all of it independently. It worked out fantastic! We’ve been using these as his practice readers for the past several weeks and he has progressed a HUGE amount!

I’m not really sure how I missed reading these books but these early reader books are a definite hit at our house now! My sons thought it would be so AWESOME to live in a boxcar😆

Spoiler alert: if you haven’t read these books they tell the story of 4 siblings who are orphaned. In “The Boxcar Children” they find an abandoned boxcar to make their home in and work odd jobs for a local doctor to get money for food.

Finally the doctor realizes they are the 4 missing children he’s been reading about in the paper and helps them reunite with their grandfather! The other books take you on more adventures with the children and their grandfather.

“The Yellow House Mystery” takes you on an adventure to find out where Grandfather’s neighbor went who turned up missing years ago. “Surprise Island” is going to take you on a private island for an adventurous trip and the family finds an addition! “Mystery Ranch” is going to take the children to meet their Aunt Jane and maybe solve another mystery while they’re there.

These were absolutely perfect for my 9 year old son! He didn’t get discouraged because he could read almost all the words however there were still some that challenged him. The books are full of bright full color pictures.

Early Reader set

It is so important in my opinion to give your children an early reader set that really interests them. So often they are just given twaddle and it not only bores them but also stifles their desire to even read. These books definitely DON’T do that! They keep your children interested at each point because there is always another mystery around the bend. My younger ones loved the brightly colored pictures too!

These are all Level 2 early readers. Level 1 is “beginning to read”. Level 2 is “reading with help” and Level 3 is “reading independently”.

I highly recommend these books for your young readers! I also recommend checking out the other books by Albert Whitman & Company! They have a large selection of quality books!
