I don’t know about you, but honestly labor isn’t something I’m just crazy about going through. However, I know that if the Lord blesses and everything goes fine then in a few weeks I will definitely be going through this process, yet again. So, even though its inevitable, I am in the preparing mode right now. I don’t wish to be caught unprepared and want to do everything in my power to make the marathon easier and quicker.
(disclaimer: I KNOW that unexpected things happen and even though I prepare God may take things in a totally different direction than my plans. However, I feel He has given me the wisdom to plan and do the best with what I have.)
1. Eating right.
This is huge! I try to eat a high protein, medium carb diet with lots of healthy fluids (water, kombucha, herbal teas & small amounts of coffee). Even though its still debated there is extremely good evidence that generous protein consumption prevents preeclampsia. It also helps to prevent excess weight gain which is just a pain all around.
2. Regular Chiropractic Adjustments.
I have done this with all of my pregnancies and am a firm believer. Not only does it help to alleviate daily problems associated with pregnancy such as back pain, sciatica and headaches but it also helps open up your body for labor and makes sure your pelvis is in optimal alignment for delivery. Trust me, you want everything working with you, not against you!
3. Supplemental Nutrition.
All my other pregnancies, I have used prenatal vitamins and had to take supplemental iron. However, this pregnancy I have been using an herbal tincture called Nourish Her Naturally and Desiccated Liver Capsules. I have the highest iron levels of any of my pregnancies and my midwife was extremely surprised at how quickly they rose with that combination. (I had been trying the other high quality prenatal and expensive iron supplement with less than satisfactory results).
I am doing my best to exercise daily. I utilize prenatal stretching, cardio and pilates. I also make sure to do specific exercises that promote a natural labor such as pelvic rocks, squats, cross-legged sitting and stretching and child pose. I believe these have had a huge impact on my previous labors.
5. Spiritual Meditations.
In the last 2 deliveries I have seen the tremendous benefit of memorizing scripture to repeat to myself through each contraction. Honestly, this has been a life-saver for me! So, right now I’m going through my Bible and picking special verses to memorize and then use during the labor and delivery for strength, endurance and encouragement.
