Continuing our adventure in "Stories to Short Chapters" Review Part #2
So, in my first post on Stories to Short Chapters I told you about us starting our journey with this super neat Language Arts program. If you haven’t read that post you can start HERE. I describe all the components of the course for you there! We’ve been doing this for close to a month now (we took a couple of weeks off for spring break 😉 ). We are enjoying these lessons so much! And I also purchased the games to go along with the program.
Just a glimpse inside the teacher’s manual.
So, what’s new with this program? Well, I absolutely love how it has a continuing story to teach from. I love Charlotte Mason style learning and this is a fantastic example of that. Using real literature to teach instead of silly “twaddle” is so much better for learning and the attention my son gives it proves this! We’re learning blends like “sh”, “shr” such as in sash, shriek, shadow and many more right now. Along with the stories he practices his writing by choosing words to fit in a sentence and then writing a word from the word box above. He also gets to pick the name of an object from several very similar words in a box. This has really helped him in sounding words out to the end (not just looking at the first of the word and choosing that one). He also uses the copywork book that goes along with the program.
Our Sneaky, Snacky, Squirrel Game!
Here’s an example of our cards. Jake has words and Gabe has letters to draw from.
We also purchased the games as I mentioned. These are the Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game and The Acorn Games. The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game comes in a cute little box shaped like a tree and has plastic acorns, little logs and a spinner. The Acorn Games need some work when you get them as they are printed on cardstock and must be applied to heavier postboard or laminated. I honestly was a little concerned about the lasting quality of that since I prefer actual board game but I’ll keep you posted on that! I was assured that others had found them very durable so that’s what I’m hoping for also! The instructions for playing these along with your lessons are in the teacher’s manual. A few ideas are writing new words and blends on cards and each player must draw one and say it correctly before getting a turn. So they get to mix fun games with learning (they might not even realize they are doing schoolwork).
Jake is really enjoying the story line in the Frolic in the Forest Reader and asks to keep going to find out what happens next! Its super cute and I am completely pleased with this program! WinterPromise Publishing has so many awesome resources to choose from, I hope you’ll check them out!
