Can You Homeschool? Yes You Can!

Jenny/ April 13, 2018/ Thrifty Homeschool Mama Tips & Tricks

Anyone who is familiar with Bob the Builder might recognize my title rendition 🙂  But I hear this from people frequently who think they “can’t” homeschool.  Not because they think its not legal (which of course it is) but for financial reasons, socialization reasons or because they think you have to have loads of patience (insert maniacal laughter here).

Really the truth is no one can be a better teacher to your children than you.  Why?  Its really quite simple, no one loves your child like you do or has the desire you do for them to be truly successful in life and eternity!

This is in no way a bash on teachers.  There are wonderful teachers out there.  My Mom was one and so is my sister-in-law and I have many friends who are.  But a teacher can never have the impact that a parent-teacher does.  A parent can lead a lifestyle of learning that makes their child actually seek to know more.  And even more importantly a parent can continuously monitor attitudes, character traits and sinful tendencies in a way that is impossible outside of home education.

So what about the objections?  Is it so expensive?  Do you have to be super smart? And do you have to have the patience of Job?  Well, actually, no on all counts!  You can homeschool so cheaply that you’ll wonder how you ever managed before.  Think of all the costs related to public school.  There’s lots of clothes, backpacks, fees, fundraisers ect…You could homeschool completely from books from your library or buy used curriculum.  You could buy a schoolhouseteachers.com membership and homeschool your whole family for around $140/year!  There are also loads of other options out there, but homeschooling can actually be super cheap and a fantastic bargain!

Do you have to know all the subjects?  No, you don’t.  Its really that simple.  Think about it.  You help your child with their homework already, why can’t you do that with a teacher manual for a homeschool curriculum?

And do you have to be super patient?  Absolutely not!  In fact, if you aren’t that’s another great reason to homeschool!  It will build your patience.  I actually used to think I was rather patient until I actually had something (like 3 kids) to make me impatient.  Then I realized how much work God could do with me and he uses polishing stones to make me smoother (the stones names are Dennis, Jake, Gabe & Lilly, lol).

So can you homeschool?  Yes you can!  Should you?  Well, of course I think its the absolutely best decision but you have to decide that yourself. 🙂  However, there are loads of helpful resources out there to help you and wonderful, friendly people who will be glad to answer questions and give suggestions.  So, if you’ve been considering it, I’d encourage you to sit down and pray about it.  You may be amazed at the answer God will place in your heart.
