“Letters from Katie Luther” book review

Jenny/ October 1, 2020/ Homeschool Reviews

I was blessed to review “Letters from Katie Luther” this summer by Reformed Free Publishing. This is an absolutely fascinating read about the life of Katie Luther, Martin Luther’s wife. The book is paperback and of excellent quality. I can about guarantee once you pick it up you won’t want to put it down.

The story is based on the true life and history of Martin and his wife Katie. I had honestly never read anything about her (I didn’t even know he was married, oops) so when I started reading this book I was hooked.

It takes you through the Katie’s life as she escapes a convent with the help of Martin, whom she then later marries 🙂 The book reads like letters between her and her best friend, who also escaped from the convent. Some liberty was taken but the basis of it is true.

I was fascinated at the life she lived (which was very hard and dangerous). I also loved the relationship it portrayed between her and her husband. I found it hilarious that Martin Luther had his own brewery attached to his house (the water was not safe for drinking a good portion of the time). The book explored the Great Plague that came through Europe and I found it incredible the dangers they willingly faced to help people.

The author has done an excellent job of drawing you into both the time period and the day to day life of the Luthers. I would have never even imagined some of the daily struggles Katie Luther went through.

This is the perfect book to get a young person (especially girls) interested in church history! Its never dull and produces a great many thought provoking ideas. I was very amazed at how easy I have it compared to Katie, yet she got SO much done! It feels very shameful to complain after reading this book.

This is considered a children’s book (for ages 10 and up) but I can tell you its also perfect for an adult! I could really relate as a wife and mother with Katie, though I found it highly amusing her husband kept selling their wedding presents 🙂 🙂

I highly recommend Reformed Free Publishing and their products. I have had the opportunity to review for them before which you can read HERE. Reformed Free Publishing provides high quality discipleship and training materials for you and your children. They are an excellent company to work with and I encourage you to check them out!
