"The Josefina Story Quilt" book e-guide review

Jenny/ July 17, 2018/ Homeschool Reviews

I love history and fictional books that are historically accurate are some of my favorite.  So, I was excited to find a young reader’s book called “The Josefina Story Quilt” and get to review  “The Josefina Story Quilt”e-guide for it from Progeny Press.

The book is adorable and perfect for 4-9 year olds as a read-a-loud or for an independent reader to read themselves.  It follows a young girl Faith and her pet chicken as they travel on a wagon train west.  It’s cute and funny and has some realistic sadness in it also.  I actually can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this book before.  Its definitely a winner in my opinion.

Now in comes “The Josefina Story Quilt” e-guide.  I found this extremely helpful and fun for my 7 year old boy!  He really enjoyed the learning opportunities in it.  For example, he was given a sentence from the book with a word that is rarely used anymore.  Then he had to tell me the meaning based on the sentence.  He got all but one right!  I found that pretty amazing.  So they are learning to infer a word’s meaning based on the context.  That is super helpful, because I cannot count the number of times I have done that in real life.

He also really enjoyed packing a wagon to go west and telling me the items he would take and why.  Here’s a few he chose:  his puppies (because they are his best friends), food (so he wouldn’t starve, lol) and clothing (so he wouldn’t freeze) and of course he wanted to take Mom, Dad, Bub & Sis and his Bible (because its God’s Holy Word).  I thought that was a pretty great list 🙂  I’m not prejudiced or anything though 😉

The e-guide is thorough and your child will get to explore the book in its entirety but it should only increase their excitement not make them completely bored like a book report might do, lol.  The guide is 34 pages long and includes an answer key.

What’s really handy about an e-guide is I simply downloaded in on my tablet, but you can download it and print it out if that’s what you prefer.  Since Jake doesn’t like to read independently I read it aloud to him, but if you have a more advanced reader you could print and let them work on it solo.  You an also purchase the guides pre-printed or on a cd if you prefer.

Progeny Press has a absolutely amazing amount of study guides for really good children’s books! A few more I’m interested in trying out are “The Courage of Sarah Noble”, “A Long Way to a New Land”, and “A Long Way Westward”.  They also have an online bookstore with many, many good books!

I am very pleased with this e-guide and highly recommend adding them to your language arts program.  Its something fun, educational and gets your kids involved in all aspects of learning!
